How to Elevate Your Yoga Practice With Tech
You don’t have to follow along with conventional thinking to get the most from your yoga routine. And thanks to today’s technology, more and more folks are tweaking their methods with apps (and even video games). When you’re ready to bring your ancient exercise into the 21st century, you have plenty of options. Keep reading to learn how you can pair contemporary methods with timeless advice that will enhance your yoga and meditation experience.

High-Tech Helpers
If you are reading this on a smart device, you already have the tools you need to download apps, set timers, and create a custom schedule. However, if you are still sticking close to a desktop PC, it may be time to upgrade your mobile technology. Your smartphone (and unlimited data plan) can become your at-home and go-everywhere yoga instructor.

Apps for ALL That
Setting goals can be a key to your advancement as you delve deeper into yoga. A few yoga goals to consider are to work on your least flexible body part, practice once per day, attend a live class each week, and to bring a friend or family member to your favorite instructor-led session.

Whatever aspirations you choose, look for a phone that has enough memory to accommodate the programs you want. At least one of these should be a goal-setting application like Goal Tracker & Habit List & Workout Calendar. This lengthily-named but easy-to-use app is available on Google Play. Tracking your weekly and monthly yoga goals can help you earmark milestones and maintain motivation.

Handy Gadgets
Accessible tech tools don’t end there. When it comes to staying in tune with your exercise routine, consider a fitness tracker or smartwatch. Wired recommends the Apple Watch and two of Fitbit models as optimal selections. Examine your budget, and think about features that are important to you, like display size, health and safety features, aesthetics, and water resistance.

A bit more expensive than a smartwatch, but ostensibly much more fun to use, are the newest video games systems. Wii U’s Wii Fit Bundle uses its motion-tracking sensor to watch as you do yoga, dance, and even strength exercises. It can be an exhilarating way to take things up a notch.

If the idea of using a videogame system pushes you a bit out of your comfort zone, that is all the more reason to try something unconventional. Keep in mind that trying new things is the only way to experience different benefits. Plus, even if you don’t succeed the first (or second or third) time, Wanderlust Worker points out your skills will grow with each failure, and you will be that much more proud of your accomplishment when you master a new skill.

No-Tech and Terrific
For all of the benefits of technology, sometimes, it makes sense to unplug. Create a relaxing space in your home and bring in other comforts that help you unwind: your favorite herbal tea, a bestselling novel, or a journal. Bring in natural light, reduce the clutter and avoid adding anything stimulating to the room.

You may also consider adding meditation to your daily routine. If meditation doesn’t come naturally, remember the more you practice, the less you will zone out into a daydream and the more you will enjoy your quiet time. While there is no specific time for your meditation practice, a great time to try is first thing in the morning before your mind becomes overwhelmed by the day. Settle in and quiet your mind, and allow yourself to savor the experience.

Don’t let all of the wonderful technology available today slip through your fingertips. Find a device that helps you elevate your yoga practice by setting goals and tracking your progress. Keep in mind, however, that technology doesn’t have to follow around everywhere, and a few quiet phone-free moments of meditating can do wonders for the mind, body, and soul.
